As you’ve probably noticed, over the past five to ten years, acai themed foods have grown in popularity and are the new trendy breakfast food—whether you’re eating out or shopping at your local health food store. Why? It could be because acai is packed with nutrients, including high levels of antioxidants, protein and fiber. Or it could be because it tastes like a dessert, with similar ice cream consistency and taste. Whatever the reason, acai and more specifically, acai smoothie bowls are a great way to start your day.

As one of the Amazon’s best kept secrets, acai berries are native to Brazil and are the fruits of acai palm trees. Although fresh acai berries are not available in the U.S., you can find them in the freezer aisle or in other forms including powders and pulp.

Because the acai fruit’s powerful nutrient profile and taste, chances are you can find multiple breakfast hotspots that sell acai smoothie bowls. You can also get creative and try making these smoothie bowls at home, which allows you to choose your own healthy toppings such as granola, fresh berries, bananas or nuts. Looking for a recipe to try? Here is an easy acai smoothie bowl recipe that you will be sure to love!

Breakfast Acai Smoothie Bowl Recipe

⅓ cup coconut water (any nut milk works), add more if smoothie is too thick

1 large sliced banana

1½ cups of frozen berries

⅓ cup plain greek yogurt

1 tablespoon honey

1 frozen packet of acai berry puree (100 grams), broken into pieces

Assorted toppings (sliced almonds, berries, shredded coconut, granola, chia seeds, sliced banana, etc.)

What ingredients can you swap out?

When making the acai smoothie bowl, feel free to replace the coconut water with an alternative such as almond milk, hemp milk, flax milk or plain water. This can still give the flavor you want with your smoothie bowl.

You can replace the greek yogurt with juices, soy milk or almond milk. If you do, you’ll need to add in additional bananas to create thickness. Also, you can replace the greek yogurt with soy yogurt, that helps give the smoothie thickness without the dairy.
